Privacy Policy
GeoPosition is an online geography guessing game available at https://geoposition.cc/. The operator and data controller is Békési Bálint, a private individual based in Hungary. For privacy questions, contact abbalint@gmail.com.
1. Information processed
- Guest sessions: a randomly generated guest identity, session cookie and public nickname, if enabled by the deployed game version.
- Gameplay: guesses, match results, scores, wins, losses and leaderboard statistics. A guess is a location chosen in the game and is not necessarily the player's real-world location.
- Technical and security information: IP address, request times, browser/user-agent details and error logs, depending on hosting and application logging configuration.
- Connected accounts (planned): when Google or Facebook login becomes available, a provider-specific account identifier and any profile fields disclosed in the login flow, such as name or email. GeoPosition does not request the provider account password. Provider names and photos are not automatically made public.
- Support requests: information you choose to send in an email.
2. Purposes and legal bases
We process information to provide gameplay and requested account functionality, retain match results, operate leaderboards, maintain security, investigate abuse, and respond to messages. Depending on the specific activity, GDPR legal bases may include performance of a contract (Article 6(1)(b)), legitimate interests in operating and securing the service (Article 6(1)(f)), and consent for optional tracking or advertising where required (Article 6(1)(a)). The correct legal basis must be confirmed for each feature before launch.
3. Public profile information
Other players may see your GeoPosition nickname, score, ranking, and game statistics. Do not include personal information in your nickname. Email addresses, authentication provider identifiers and session tokens are not intended to be public. Usernames may be moderated for abuse.
4. Cookies, browser storage and advertising technologies
GeoPosition uses the essential geoguesser_session cookie to maintain your guest or signed-in profile, with a maximum lifetime of 180 days. The technical cookie name retains our previous site name. Temporary Google and Facebook sign-in state cookies last up to 10 minutes. Blocking essential cookies may prevent your profile or sign-in from working.
Third-party advertisers, including Monetag and its advertising partners, may place cookies in your browser and use similar browser storage or tracking technologies when ads load. These technologies are separate from the essential game session cookie and may support ad selection, frequency limits and reporting. Advertising cookies and their lifetimes vary by provider and campaign; see Monetag's Cookies Policy. Google Maps and Street View may also use their own technologies under Google's policies.
5. Google Maps and Street View (currently used)
GeoPosition uses Google Maps and Street View. When these features load, Google may receive technical information, including your IP address and interaction data, under Google's policies. See Google Privacy Policy and Google Maps Terms.
6. Google and Facebook sign-in (planned)
If social sign-in is enabled, Google or Meta authenticates you and sends GeoPosition information allowed by the permissions shown to you. We intend to use the provider's stable user identifier to associate your GeoPosition account, and may allow linking a guest profile to that account. See Google's privacy policy and Meta's privacy policy. Connecting an account is optional; guest gameplay remains available.
7. Monetag advertising
GeoPosition displays advertising through Monetag, a service of the Propeller Ads group. Ads help support the game. The site includes a vignette advertising integration; formats and availability may vary by device, region and campaign.
When advertising loads, Monetag and advertising partners may receive your IP address, approximate region, browser and operating system, page and referring URLs, and advertising interactions. They may use this information and browser identifiers to deliver relevant ads, measure performance, limit repetition and detect fraud. We do not include your account credentials or game profile in our ad integration.

8. Google AdSense advertising (planned)
GeoPosition may use Google AdSense to display advertising. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to deliver, limit, personalize (if permitted), and measure ads. You can learn more in Google's advertising technologies information and Google's privacy policy. Where required, non-essential ad storage and personalized advertising will depend on valid consent. A Google-certified consent management platform integrated with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework will be configured where required for AdSense in the EEA, UK and Switzerland.
9. Advertising choices and notifications
Where consent is required for non-essential advertising storage or access, it must be obtained before that technology is used. Merely visiting the site, playing a game or accepting the Terms of Service does not constitute that consent. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
Monetag provides an advertising opt-out page for supported advertising formats. Its cookie-based choice applies to the browser and device used; you may need to repeat it after clearing cookies or changing browsers. This choice limits relevant advertising and does not necessarily remove all ads or replace any required prior consent.
You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings. If you have allowed advertising push notifications, revoke that permission in your browser's site or notification settings. Browser notification permission is separate from advertising-cookie consent. No notification permission or ad click is required to submit a game guess. 10. Recipients and international transfers
Information may be processed by our hosting provider (Oracle Cloud), Google Maps, enabled Google or Facebook authentication services, and Monetag and its advertising partners. If Google AdSense is enabled in future, its providers may also process information as described above. Third-party ad requests transmit technical information directly from your browser to the relevant providers.
Advertising providers may process information outside Hungary and the European Economic Area. The applicable recipient, destination and transfer safeguards depend on the provider; see Monetag's Privacy Policy for its disclosures, or contact us about transfers associated with GeoPosition.
11. Retention and security
Session, gameplay, account, security and support information is retained for as long as needed for the relevant purpose and applicable legal obligations. Before publishing, specify the actual retention schedule for guest sessions, account records, match history, server logs, and backups, as well as the process for account deletion. We use access controls and other reasonable safeguards, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.
12. Your data protection rights
Where applicable, you may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, or object to certain processing, and withdraw consent. Send requests to abbalint@gmail.com. You may also lodge a complaint with a competent supervisory authority, including the Hungarian National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH). Clearing browser cookies can make an unlinked guest identity inaccessible.
13. Children
GeoPosition is a general-audience geography game. Before enabling social login or targeted advertising, establish and publish an appropriate minimum-age policy and procedures for any required parental consent.
14. Changes and contact
This policy may be updated as the service evolves. Significant changes will be communicated where appropriate.
